Step 1. Attach thread behind the eye and wrap to the bend of the hook. Bring thread behind the eye. Apply head cement to the thread
Step 2. Cut a strip of foam as wide as the hook gap and 3 times the shank length. Extend the foam a shank length past the eye and tie in foam with several wraps at this point.
Step 3. Lift foam up and wrap under foam 1/3 hook shank distance toward tail. Place foam back down and secure with several wraps of thread creating a bump of foam.

Step 4. Lift foam up and spiral back ½ the distance of the first bump and secure with several wraps of thread.
Step 5. Repeat step 4 two more times. Each bump will be ½ the size of the previous bump.
Step 6. Thread should now be at the bend of the hook. Cut excess foam off the back at an angle extending ½ a hook shank length.

Step 7. Tie in a brown saddle hackle at the bend of the hook.
Step 8. Apply antron dubbing to thread. Dub a body to the back of the first bump created. Do not smash down foam bumps down.
Step 9. Palmer hackle forward using gaps where thread secured foam to the back of the first bump.

Step 10. Stack a clump of elk hair. Tie in a wing that extends to the back of the hook.
Step 11. Take thread forward in one wrap to the eye. Apply antron dubbing and dub back to the base of the wing.
Step 12. Bring foam extending off the front of the hook back and build a foam head. Secure with several wraps of thread. Trim foam as shown.

Step 13. Attach red rubber legs to each side of the body at the base of the wing. Legs should be tied on under the foam on the side.
Step 14. Tie in a small piece of bright foam if desired for an indicator. Trim off excess foam and whip finish.

White River rainbow ate the Klod Hopper

Donna Doudy caught about 20 of these outside of Meeker on the White with Dry flies

The Klod Hopper strikes again.

Paul Stimpson and I used to put on a fly tying class for Whiting Farms at the FFF conclaves. This was one of the patterns Paul tied. I was impressed with ease of tying it. I tie it in size 8, 12, & 14. I use it in my hopper-copper-dropper fishing. I had a fun day with it floating the Madison (Paul ties for Arricks fly shop in West Yellowstone). I have fished it on the White, the Green, the Colorado and several other rivers successfully. TIP: Tie different color foam indicators for different sizes.
